Danbury Library,
Danbury Public Schools and
Western Connecticut State University
introduce our second annual One Book, One Community title:
One Book, One Community
“One Book, One Community” encourages the Danbury and Western Connecticut State University communities to read the same book during the summer and fall of 2009, then come together to discuss the book and participate in activities related to the book in venues throughout the city and university. Although many communities across America sponsor similar programs, this is one of the few where a city public library, a public school system and a university have formed a partnership for this initiative.
The Book
The book selection for 2009 is Hurry Down Sunshine by Michael Greenberg. The memoir tells the story of the extraordinary summer when, at the age of fifteen, his daughter Sally was struck mad. Mental health problems still carry a stigma and as a result are often not openly discussed in our society. By reading the book and attending the various programs related to it, we hope to bring this important issue into the light, for those who might need help and their families.
The Events
Events designed to compliment the themes of the book are scheduled throughout the month of October 2009, ending with a special appearance by Michael Greenberg on October 28.
